Employment Rate Decreases

On August 7, the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released the most recent unemployment numbers.  In July, 247,000 jobs were cut, bringing the total of unemployed workers to 14.5 million.  The national unemployment rate decreased slightly to 9.4 percent, down from 9.5 percent in June.  This is the first decrease since April of 2008, an indication that the recession may be abating. The rate of job loss decreased to a monthly average of 331,000 between May and July, down from 645,000 between November and April.

More information on the recent unemployment data is available here.

Special Announcement Regarding Justice for Immigrants Regional Training

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Justice for Immigrants (JFI) campaign will conduct training in the Philadelphia area on October 7-9, 2009.  The purpose of the training is to convene supporters of comprehensive immigration reform (CIR), strengthen and grow the support base for immigration reform, and arm supporters with updated messages and educational pieces to continue to push for CIR.

JFI has identified Pennsylvania and the surrounding states as prime areas of opportunity to move large numbers of Catholics and Catholic federal lawmakers to support CIR.

Event information, including the agenda, may be found here

A limited number of scholarships are available, and anyone interested in a scholarship should call 202-541-3165.  Questions about the convening may also be directed to the same telephone number.

Please consider attending the training and/or sharing this information with your networks.  Supporters of immigration reform from all states are welcome to attend the training.

Are Your Volunteer Jobs Registered?

The web site www.serve.gov was launched as part of the new volunteer initiative of the First Lady and the Corporation for Community and National Service.  Registering events and volunteer opportunities is a way to get more people engaged in the work of Catholic Charities.

Over the summer, the President, the First Lady, the Vice President, Mrs. Biden, and all the Cabinet members have been asked that as they travel across the country, they visit volunteer activities that are registered on the webpage. To register an event or to find an opportunity to volunteer, please visit www.serve.gov.
