Catholic Charities USA Action Alert 11/30/09

Tell Congress to Support the National Housing Trust Fund

Please call your U.S. Representative and both of your Senators on December 1 and 2 and urge them to provide funding for National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF)

Tell them to provide at least $1 billion for the National Housing Trust Fund before Congress adjourns for Christmas.   Urge them to support any bill moving through Congress that contains money for the NHTF.

Let them know that funding the NHTF will create needed jobs.

  1. A fully capitalize Trust Fund will create 15,100 new construction jobs and 3,800 jobs in ongoing operations.
  2. The NHTF will support local economies as low income families can afford to spend more money on goods and services when they are not spending half or more of their income on housing.
  3. The NHTF will stabilize communities by providing necessary resources to repair dilapidated

Call 877-210-5351, the toll free number for the congressional switchboard. Ask to be connected to the housing staffer for your representative’s and senators’ offices.

Background

The National Housing Trust Fund was established by the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, which was signed into law by President George W. Bush. Once capitalized, the Trust Fund will provide communities with funds to build, preserve, and rehabilitate rental homes that are affordable for extremely low-income households. The Housing Trust provides a dedicated source of funding and 75 percent of the funds for rental housing must benefit extremely low- income households and all funds must benefit very low-income households.

In his FY 10 budget proposal, President Obama called for $1 billion in funding for the NHTF.
