Haiti’s Reality

 

An estimated 200,000 people were killed, and 196,595 are injured. Approximately1 million people need shelter, water and sanitation; 2 million people need daily food. Karel Zelenka, CRS Haiti Country Representative speaks about his experience during the earthquake via a video interview with

Latest CRS/Caritas Haiti Efforts

 

 

CRS, working with Caritas Haiti, the local Church’s charitable agency, is playing a large role in feeding and helping the 2 million people in need. We are responsible for three of 16 designated food distribution sites set up by the U.N. World Food Program. Results to date:

  • Provided food to 113,978 people (most received two week rations) and nonfood items (such as soap, towels and toothpaste) to more than 21,736 people.
  • Provided medical care and treatment to a total of 3,226 people, and hygiene kits to 10,000 people.
  • Supported emergency medical care by providing materials, supplies and trained volunteers.
  • Constructed latrines and wash stations as part of a full water and sanitation plan.
  • Provided trauma counselors and held Mass at the Pétionville Golf Club, the largest camp in the city.

U.S. Catholic Community Responds

  • CRS has received $36.5 million in cash and commitments.
  • St. Paul Parish in Webster, NY held a Hope for Haiti coffeehouse, where youth set up displays. Streaming Hope For Haiti, selling t-shirts and holding a silent auction, a Hoops for Haiti basketball benefit, and a dance.
  • Servite High School in Anaheim, CA is one of many schools reporting very generous collections.
  • Cabrini College in Radnor, PA held a 24-hour live radio broadcast
  • Hurricane Katrina survivors in New Orleans – from the Archdiocese, schools and parishes to Catholic Charities – have found creative ways to raise funds. In true Cajun style, students at Archbishop Rummel High School hosted a “Who Dat for Haiti” fundraiser, selling king cake and dressing in Saints attire.
  • Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles is planning a dinner featuring Haitian food.
  • Lewis University in Romeoville, IL designated Tuesdays for Haiti so student groups can plan fundraisers, service projects, or teaching session to help others connect with the long-term needs of Haiti.
